This course involves a critical look at Japan (past and present) and its various roles on the world stage. Along the way, we visit key frameworks for understanding economic, political and cultural circumstances around the world. Specifically, we explore globalization, localization, intercultural understanding, intercultural sensitivity, multiculturalism and identity as concepts to better understand ourselves as individuals and as regional, national and supranational organizations. Class meetings will be conducted mainly in English. Reading assignments and out-of-class research will be done in both Japanese and English.

This is the second of four intensive English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses that form the CUBE Accelerated Language and Academics (CALA) program. This program is designed for highly motivated students who are either planning on academic study abroad, other study abroad experiences or who desire a more intensive focus on English language learning. This course is based on a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach to instruction, and expands on the language and content that is part of second-semester Core English Courses (American Studies, Discussion & Debate, CUBE English II). As with these core courses, the goal is natural language development through deep engagement in the weekly content. Although test taking is not highlighted, classroom activities and out-of-class assignments will help learners develop the knowledge and skills needed to do well on English language proficiency tests such as the TOEFL or IELTS.
This course will build on the knowledge and skills developed in semester one. At the same time, focused attention will be directed at each section of the various proficiency tests to ensure students achieve their best possible performance in time for deadlines set by affiliate schools.
